Like so many, i love wandering around old book stores in search of old stories to read. I have found plenty of great out of print books hidding around every corner, covered in dust. One of the first books i picked up at a second hand store was, Clan of the cave bear by author Jean M Auel. I loved her stories so much i decided to read the whole series. Excellent books. very long and drawn out with too many details and wasted chapters on useless details about food and the nomadic culture of the cavemen, but in the end i learned a lot about descriptive writing and creating characters worth falling in love with. Finally after 4 years of writing jean has put out her final book to the series, “land of the painted caves.” I’m very excited to read this final chapter and get back to life in the late iceage. Has anyone started reading this book yet? and what are your thoughts on descriptive writing when it takes 3 pages to describe the foods they are eating? Too much description bores the reader. I found myself skimming the chapter, passing the paragraphs that described every detail from the clay bowls to the seeds in the fruits!!

I still LOVE Jean M Auel- and if you know her writing you can comment. Is it good as a writer to add so much detail?

G.M. Raza Author of Moonlight Pearl- A werewolf/ vampire story with a very different twist. Come check it out!

When as a writer do you know if you are adding too much detail??? Descriptive writing seems to be an art. Whats the limit?
