Veronica Backham – Interview with Lorelei Bell (Script)

VB: Hello Lorelei, welcome back. I kind of remember, we have like already discussed your book Vampire Ascending. I have heard you have published like a second book with vampires, or so I heard. Is it like somehow related to the first one? Also… How do I say that in the friendliest possible way…? (Thinking.) Are you still human? I mean, after all, you are like hanging out with all these bloodsuckers, and maybe they took like advantage of you… My manager told me, you are now skilled in applying proper biting positions, and, honestly, being a celebrity and working on an appearance at the Letterman show, bite marks would look like… uhm… not good. (Sigh.) Sorry for being like paranoid…

LB: Hi, Veronica. Yes. I’ve published a second book in the series. This one is called “Vampire’s Trill”. This picks up where the last one left off. Rest assured I am still human. I will neither deny nor confirm that I’m hanging out with “these bloodsuckers”. My informant for such things is a guarded secret. I get the information from “them”. Thus, anything I’ve passed on to potential readers is from this “informant”. And yes, bite marks would be bad… if they were in a place that showed (wink).

VB: Okay. (Thinking.) You know, I don’t have like the time to read, you know, being a famous celebrity like me. (Sigh.) So… Could you tell us what happened in the first book and how it continues in the second? I also heard something about a Sabrina Strong. How does she like belong into this scenario?

LB: In the first book Sabrina Strong is hired by a vampire magnate, Bjorn Tremayne. He needed her to find the person who murdered his wife, and a few other vampires in his regime. Along the way she is mesmerized by Tremayne’s second in command, Nicolas Paduaru. But Tremayne has dibs. Then, almost too late, he realizes that being near her makes him a little too thirsty… if you know what I mean? So, he uses Dante (a shifter) to hide her scent, and this backfires and now Sabrina and Dante become lovers, which doesn’t sit very well with Tremayne.

In the meantime, her very good friend, Jeanie Woodbine, is abducted and Sabrina is determined to find her. Which she does, and it’s nearly too late to save her. In fact Sabrina has to make the decision as to what to do for her. So, Jeanie becomes a vampire.

At the same time, she finally meets the vampire who haunts her dreams, Vasyl. He is the one who marked her as his own, and she still needs to find out why he bit her. She does, gradually, and more about it is revealed to her in the second book.

Of course, Sabrina finds out who murdered Tremayne’s wife, and it is nearly too late to stop him from killing them all when he turns into a vampire and comes hunting them. But, of course Tremayne stops the murderer in time.

In the second book we find that life is not so sweet for Sabrina. Tremayne has command than Dante to not touch Sabrina again. Since Tremayne is his master, he must obey. She’s very upset about this turn of events.

Vasyl reveals to her that she is the sibyl, and somehow she is to get a mystic ring. It’s all tied into a very little known network of the spirit world, and she meets Bill Gannon who she is not sure about his intent to marry her.

Meanwhile they are spying on Ilona Tremayne—who they believe set up the murders of her own husband, Erik, and the rest of them. Dante risks his life in shifting down to a mouse, and then shifts back up a little too quickly. He forgets the things he heard while a mouse in the inner sanctum of Tremayne Towers, but Sabrina, once again, uses her clairvoyant powers to unravel the mystery. Dante is now sick and must leave to try and be healed by his uncle, who is a shaman.

When she finds out that Tremayne is being starved and kept in an old abandoned church in order to miss his trial, Sabrina calls on the help of Rick, who happens to be a leprechaun. She manages to get Tremayne to his trial, but their ruling is not something she can agree to. Thus, her refusal—and the mayhem that follows—causes her to be on the demon’s hit list.

During her visit she also has some pleasurable moments with an incubus, named Jacob who follows her back to her world. She figures out how to get him back to his world—because he’s got only one thing on his mind all the time—and just as she is rid of one problem another crops up. And this one nearly costs her her life. In fact she winds up in the hospital.

I hope this helps you catch up on the series, Veronica?

VB: Whoa! I’m almost suffering like from an information overload… This is just amazing… I mean, how you come up with all that and even have the time to write it all down. (Sigh.) And this sounds like a real interesting story. Now, that I have my new cool Kindle, maybe I will have a look at it. (Thinking) Let me just ask something about that Sabrina Strong character… I mean, I think I am a strong woman, otherwise I wouldn’t have made in the celebrity business, and Sabrina has even “Strong” like in her name. How has Sabrina changed since the start of the first book? I mean, was she always that strong a woman? And is she ever gonna change again? I assume there will be like more books. Right?

LB: Yes, Veronica, Sabrina Strong changes, and there will be more books to come. I’m working on the next ones right now, as a matter of fact.

Sabrina had to learn not to trust everyone who seemed to be her friend. Especially in the second book this becomes more apparent. In the beginning of the series she wasn’t exactly a weak person-as her name implies (and good for you for catching that!). In fact the job she was hired on for held a lot of danger for her, and continues into the second book when she agrees to help get Bjorn Tremayne out of a jam. But when it comes down to it, she still has her own mind and won’t do something she doesn’t want to.

Sabrina changes in a lot of ways, and will continue to change as she faces new challenges in each book. For instance in the second one, she must accept that she is the sibyl, and realize her role in the supernatural world as well as the human one when things get out of hand with the vampires. She still has much to learn, but Vasyl is there to help her out.

VB: Oh yes, don’t I know it. I, too, have a strong man in my life. Well, at the moment I am not quite sure where he is… (Sigh.) So, this Vasyl character seems to be quite interesting. Can you tell me more about him? Is he a good-looking hunk of a man, something to swoon about?

LB: Oh, yes. Vasyl is quite magnifique! He has large, Byzantine eyes that would make you melt if you stare into them long enough, with this somewhat saintly look, but not quite so… saintly – if you know what I’ mean? He’s also French, did you know? The yummy-hunky factor around 10. He looks like the character Javier Vachon from “Forever Knight”, played by Ben Bass. That’s as close as I can compare him to any actor.

VB: Oh, stop it! You got me swooning. (Giggle) So, when can we expect the next book? And, by the way, did anybody contact you for the movie rights?

LB: (Laughing) I’m working on the third book right now. Trying to get it as good as I can before sending it to my publisher.nMovie rights? I wish! But I’ve got a partial cast, just in case. (Chuckle)

VB: Okay, one last question… That was on my mind for a while. Usually I don’t think too long about things but this was stuck. (Thinking) I think Sabrina is such a nice name, and they even made a movie of it, you know, with Humphrey Bogart and Harrison Ford. Why does she want to change her name to Sibyl?

LB: Oh, Sabrina isn’t changing her name. She is A sibyl. The word sibyl comes from the Latin/Greek word sibylla, which means prophetess. The sibyl was a special woman who is imbued with the ability to tell the future. We call such people today a clairvoyant. But Sabrina is a very powerful clairvoyant–one of her kind, in fact. She has been sought for two thousand years, since the last of her kind was ever on earth.

I hope that helps the confusion, Veronica.

VB: Well, that explains like a lot, you know that… (Sneezing) Oh God! I think I might have like catched a cold! Thank you, Lorelei, for this interview, and please come back when the next book is out. (Sneezing) I can’t show up at the Letterman show with a cold… Hey, Bobby, get my limo ready! And somebody call my doctor… This is an emergency!
