Mac OS-X Lion: Say Good-bye To Safari, The Lamest Web Browser, Install Chrome

On August 28, 2011, in Computers, Technology, by Wilfried F. Voss

I didn’t expect the latest upgrade from Mac OS-X “Snow Leopard” to “Lion” to be such an emotional roller coaster. Yet it was. The upgrade to “Snow Leopard” was pure fun and joy, because it made everything faster, combined with some much-appreciated improvements. “Lion” was quite the opposite of all that.

Hey, Mr. Steve Jobs, My MacBook Is NOT An iPhone Or An iPad!

The OS-X upgrade from “Snow Leopard” to “Lion” includes a number of features that were designed to help users familiarizing themselves with the features used in an iPhone or iPad, such as the reversed, un-natural scrolling. It reminds me of the dreadful period (until about three years ago) when I still used Microsoft Windows and each “upgrade” came with new features that made you call out “What the f… is going on here? Why is Microsoft telling me what’s good for me and what not?”

Mac OS-X Lion: Goodbye Mail, Hello Thunderbird – Goodbye Safari, Hello Firefox

I find it astonishing that an extremely competent company like Apple, whose business strategy is focused on cloud technologies, is not able to keep up with their competition when it comes to email programs and browsers. Adding features, that are already offered by MS Outlook and Thunderbird for years, doesn’t seem to be a major task.

WordPress Plugin: Counts Per Day – Statistics

On May 11, 2011, in Professional Blogging, Technology, WordPress plugins, by Wilfried F. Voss

Before I engage into praising my newest, favorite WordPress plugin, let me just say: I apologize for my ignorance regarding Google Analytics. I understand that it is, in fact, a very powerful tool for website statistics. In my personal case, though, running a WordPress-based website and looking for the easiest solution, I chose the Counts Per Day plugin. It provides all the information I wanted in a statistics tool, and I can run it directly from within WordPress. The installation was a breeze, and I could use the plugin without further settings.

The most elegant feature of a physical book is that it disappears while you’re reading. Immersed in the author’s world and ideas, you don’t notice a book’s glue, the stitching, or ink. Our top design objective was to make Kindle disappear—just like a physical book—so you can get lost in your reading, not the technology.

WordPress – Error Establishing A Database Connection

On May 5, 2011, in Professional Blogging, Technology, WordPress, by Wilfried F. Voss

The following scenario will sound very familiar to a great number of bloggers who run WordPress on their own domain: You have maintained your blog for months or even years and added new posts frequently, and during that time period the system ran smoothly without noticeable problems. However, now that you have a well-sized website the system all of a sudden crashes frequently due to “Error Establishing A Database Connection.”

What Is A Nuclear Meltdown?

On March 13, 2011, in Environmental Protection, Nuclear Meltdown, Technology, by Wilfried F. Voss

A meltdown occurs when a severe failure of a nuclear power plant system prevents proper cooling of the reactor core, to the extent that the nuclear fuel assemblies overheat and melt. A meltdown is considered very serious because of the potential that radioactive materials could be released into the environment. A core meltdown will also render the reactor unstable until it is repaired. The scrapping and disposal of the reactor core will incur substantial costs for the operator.

In Commercial Searches Google Results Are Polluted

If you search ‘cancer,’ that’s an informational search and on those, Google is amazing. But in commercial searches, Google’s results are really polluted. My own personal experience says that the guy with the biggest S.E.O. budget always ranks the highest.
