Alistair Kerr was born in Scotland in 1953. His parents were a medical doctor who served in the Royal Army Medical Corps: latterly as a university lecturer in Medicine, and a nurse (SRN). He read Law and History at the University of Edinburgh. He became a civil servant with the British Foreign Office, with which he had five overseas postings: two at the British Embassy, Paris.

Among other roles, he has been the Foreign Office’s Parliamentary Clerk (coordinating the Ministry’s Parliamentary business), the Environment Attache in Paris, and has served as Charge d’Affaires in the absence of his Ambassador. He speaks French, German and Spanish. He lives a retired existence in rural Lincolnshire and carries out research into his favourite subjects. These include environmental and energy issues, history, heraldry and genealogy.

His relations on his father’s side include the notorious nineteen-thirties murderer, Dr Buck Ruxton. His mother is descended from a long line of Cumbrian farmers.
