Just the other day I updated the Official Statcounter WordPress Plugin. After installing version 1.1, logging out, and logging in the next day, I got the "white screen of death," meaning I was logged in, but the screen was blank.

I am a passionate WordPress user because WordPress allows me to write content for my blog without the tedious task of web design. As a WordPress user you do encounter some little obstacles over time, but usually you can live with them. After all, the blog works wonderfully.

However, just the other day I updated the Official Statcounter Plugin, “a free yet reliable invisible web tracker, highly configurable hit counter and real-time detailed web stats. Insert a simple piece of our code on your web page or blog and you will be able to analyse and monitor all the visitors to your website in real-time!”

Well, forget about the reliability! After installing version 1.1, logging out, and logging in the next day, I got the “white screen of death,” meaning I was logged in, but the screen was blank. It took me hours to find a solution, which was not a good timing, because I needed to post a paid article on my blog.

Whenever you encounter the “white screen of death,” try the following (It worked in my particular case, but there is no guarantee that this is the universal solution):

Through FTP program (if you don’t use one, look at your service providers web tools, or contact the service provider’s support) log in to your web site. Look for the “wp-content” folder and open it. You should see a folder “plugins.” Rename the folder to, for instance, “temp_plugins,” then log in to your blog. You will notice that all plugins are being reported as missing (see Plugins screen). Log out, then rename the folder back to “plugins.” Log back in, and you will find all plugins in their place, but they’re all deactivated. Activate the plugins one by one until you receive an error message, which identifies the perpetrator. If you get the error message, you have – I am sorry to say – engage the same procedure again, however, without activating the plugin that caused the problem.

Form here on, make sure you have the newest WordPress version installed. Also make sure you have the plugin’s newest version. In my case, however, I didn’t trust the vendor of the plugin anymore. I can’t afford losing as much time as I did. After all, the plugin provided a nice feature, but it was not mandatory for my blog. If you have problems with a plugin you like, but don’t trust it anymore, look for a similar plugin. There are usually a number of similar plugins available.
